Caring for your dentures.
Your dentures are made with high quality acrylic and need to be maintained regularly. In time, your dentures will lose their smooth shiny finish due to scrubbing with harmful cleaning abrasives (whitening toothpastes and baking soda). Or by the very nature of the foods we eat. Once this smooth surface is gone, stains and plaque will be harder to remove. Denture soaking should never be done in any caustic liquids such as diluted solutions of bleaches.

You should return to your Denturist to have your dentures polished approximately every six months.
You will also find that stains and calculus will adhere to the surfaces of the denture generally around the necks of the teeth. Daily cleaning with a soft brush and a professional denture cleaner, such as Denture Brite™ will assist in keeping your dentures clean and comfortable.
Your mouth is an environment that contains many oral bacteria good and bad. Tissues of the mouth can indicate the health of an individual and can show early signs of diseases that may be serious. It’s important to maintain good oral health so visit your Denturist or dentist for an examination every year. The Denturist will examine your denture for wear and fit and provide a complete oral examination.
As a rule of thumb, you should establish the following routine:
Have your dentures checked annually.
Reline your dentures every 2 to 3 years.
Replace your dentures every 5 to 6 years, depending on the amount of wear on the teeth and the shrinkage of your gums.

TYPES OF DENTURES

LOW COST DENTURES
Many people don't realize that there are differences. A Low Cost denture is a denture which is set up without going into precise measuring and and positioning of the jaws in relation to the temporal mandibular joint. The teeth and gums are very plain looking and are of a lower quality. Generally little time is spent, so as to provide dentures at a more affordable cost. The outcome and satisfaction for many patients is poor.

PERSONALIZED DENTURES
Provide a degree accuracy in measurements and teeth positioning. Preliminary and final impressions is what makes the fit of these dentures great. A strong focus on tooth selection and arrangement is what makes this a success and patients get to enjoy the natural appearance these dentures. The quality of the teeth and materials used are of much greater quality. This provides for greater longevity and better wear and more fracture resistance. This is the denture which most people seek.

PRECISION DENTURES
For dentures to be precision (equilibrated) dentures it requires that precision measurements be taken in relationship to the patient’s temporal mandibular joint. The upper and lower denture is fabricated to simulate as close as possible the jaw movements of the patient. This is achieved by using a precision articulator (like a mechanical jaw), doing a face bow transfer and using cusp teeth, setting them in balance to maximize stability and efficiency.
Have you ever heard of these brands of dentures?

1. Swissident (Geneva 200)Dentures
These dentures where developed over 30 years ago and are designed on a principle of non-interceptive occlusion, which eliminates cusps for bladed teeth. This kind of denture can be very helpful for patients with gums which are really worn down and retention is a problem.

2. BPS Dentures (Biofunctional Prosthetic System)
BPS dentures are one of the latest techniques in precision dentures. Developed by the Ivoclar, a multi national research and development company specializing in dental products and materials. Their researchers developed this method of denture construction to help maintain a higher degree of quality. A trademark Stratos Articulator, also developed by Ivoclar is used to set teeth. They use well marketed teeth called “Antaris” and “Postaris”. Much research have gone into the design to make the denture teeth look more natural. The teeth are made of very hard material designed to stand up better for wear and are artistically pleasing. When the dentures are processed into plastic gums an injection process called Ivocap is used.

IMPLANT OVERDENTURES
Implant overdentures can involve as few as two implants or as many as six and even more. These titanium implants are surgically placed into the jaw bone. A small attachement protrudes just above the gum. Dentures or partials can then be attached to these implants. These provide excellent retention and can be removed by hand for cleaning. Common shapes of these implant attachments above the gum may look like a small little ball or button. These are then clicked on by a “o” ring made of nylon or rubber. Clips are another common attachment.
The cost can be very expensive, however the result outperforms traditional treatments. Implant dentistry is the technology of the day and is more popular than ever before. Many people expect dentures to fit as well as natural teeth, however because dentures are not rooted in, they cannot possibly remain seated against the forces during mastication. If people have this expectation the only possible way science has discovered to deliver the result are with implants.

PARTIAL DENTURES

CAST PARTIALS
Are dentures which where designed to replace intermittent missing natural teeth. Metal is used to provide strength in areas where the denture would be too thin and would otherwise break. Special alloys have been developed, which are resistant to the acid's of the mouth and are lightweight and most important are safe and non toxic. Precision fittings are only possible when metal connectors are used.

ACRYLIC PARTIALS
Are dentures, as with Cast Partials, replace missing teeth between natural teeth. This type of appliance is usually used as a temporary replacement while the gums resorb after surgery or recent tooth extractions. Patients with compromised teeth use this as a ideal alternative. This type of plate is less expensive but more likely to fracture.

IMMEDIATE DENTURES
Immediate dentures are dentures which are which inserted at the sametime as the extractions of the natural teeth. These dentures allow a person to have their teeth immediately, however there are issues of fit and cosmetic concerns which should he discussed with the Denturist so you understand the disatvantages and benefits of this procedure.

DENTURE REPAIRS
It is important to realize that denture acrylics, although are strong, are not unbreakable. Fracturing can happen if the situation presents. No practitioner can assure or guarantee against this unfortunate occurrence. It must always be understood that the best acrylics made are known to break. Special acrylics have been developed to so that repairs can be done quickly and the same day.

RELINES and REBASES
Relines involve the removal of approximately 2-3mm of the inside acrylic that touches the gum and is replaced with new acrylic refitted to the changes in gum shrinkage that cause loose dentures.
New technologies have been developed to allow for relines to be done in a day. This eliminates the need to leave the denture overnight. Not all relines can be done this way so an evaluation should be done to decide if this method would be suitable for you. Rebasing is a similar process where all the pink acrylic is replaced with new but using the old teeth. This can only be done if the teeth are in good condition.
